International financial markets remained broadly resilient in July 2026. A robust economic environment and solid corporate results supported the markets, while persistently high interest rates continued to create headwinds, particularly for bonds. Against this backdrop, the PULSE and PRO pension solutions recorded slightly positive performance.

Both solutions delivered positive performance in July and have continued to show encouraging development since the start of the year. Their funding ratios also remained at solid levels as at the end of July.

Column by Alain Grand

For SMEs, occupational pension provision is more than a statutory obligation. It influences their attractiveness as an employer, protects employees and, at the same time, must be manageable within HR administration and payroll without requiring disproportionate effort. The key question, therefore, is not which pension solution offers the widest possible range of benefits, but whether it fits the profile of the workforce, the business model and the company’s resources.

International financial markets continued to operate in a challenging environment in June 2026. Geopolitical risks, elevated inflation and the ongoing restrictive monetary policy created uncertainty. Nevertheless, the PULSE and PRO pension solutions once again delivered positive results during the reporting month.

Both solutions recorded pleasing performance in June. At the same time, their funding ratios continued to increase. PULSE and PRO therefore closed the first half of 2026 from a stronger financial position.

Effective 1 July 2026, Tellco pk appointed a new Investment Committee for a five-year term of office. The highest priority of this reorganisation is to strengthen investment governance - as the basis for a professional, return-oriented and long-term investment process. To this end, the newly formed committee brings together proven specialist expertise in institutional asset management, real estate investment, governance/compliance and investment advisory, thereby strengthening the professional oversight of Tellco pk's pension assets.

The Investment Committee advises the Foundation's supreme governing body on all investment matters, determines the portfolio's tactical positioning, monitors the implementation of the investment strategy and assesses performance and risks. It also prepares proposals and recommendations for the Foundation's supreme governing body. The members of the newly constituted committee were deliberately selected with a sustainable and long-term focus. It may call upon additional external experts where required.

A part-time position here, a short-term assignment there, and perhaps another employer as well: working models of this kind have long been part of today’s professional landscape. However, they create situations in occupational pension provision that do not readily fit within the traditional BVG model.

Many SMEs primarily view occupational pension provision as a statutory obligation: insuring employees, calculating contributions and meeting regulatory requirements. Yet choosing the right pension solution can influence far more than just administrative compliance.

It has an impact on cost planning, flexibility, employer attractiveness and a company’s strategic direction. This is precisely why SMEs should ask themselves: does the current pension solution still fit their corporate strategy?

In May 2026, financial markets continued to be shaped by a challenging environment. Geopolitical uncertainties, inflation risks and fluctuating commodity prices contributed to a cautious overall mood. At the same time, robust corporate earnings, solid fundamentals and a positive development in equity markets supported portfolios.

In this environment, Tellco pk’s pension solutions developed positively. Both PULSE and PRO reported solid funding ratios as at end-May and achieved pleasing performance.

Flexible working models: when occupational pensions become a management task

Part-time work, hourly wages and temporary assignments have long been part of everyday life for many SMEs. Staff schedules change at short notice, projects are extended or new part-time positions are added. What gives companies greater flexibility in their day-to-day operations also brings additional complexity to occupational pensions.

This is because the BVG was historically designed for stable employment relationships, fixed salaries and long-term employment. The reality in many companies today, however, looks very different.

Company-owned pension funds under pressure: Why many SMEs will need to make a new decision in 2026

Column by Alain Grand

For a long time, a company-owned pension fund was regarded in Switzerland as an expression of entrepreneurial independence. Those who ran their own pension scheme determined their own investment strategy, pension plans and financing. Particularly among established SMEs, having an in-house pension fund was often part of the corporate culture — associated with the aspiration to assume long-term responsibility for both employees and the company.

But reality has changed. More and more companies are now asking themselves whether this model is still viable under the current framework conditions.

Developments in recent years speak for themselves: since 2013, hundreds of companies have given up their company-owned pension funds and transferred them to a collective or joint pension institution. The reasons for this lie less in a lack of willingness than in the increasing requirements around governance, specialist expertise and risk management.
